American and European Dobermans: Examining the Differences and the Claims

The author, Marie-Luise Smith, revised and expanded the article following a closer review of the research and breed standards. She corrected the longevity figures and expanded the discussion of breeding goals, breed standards and the limits of continental labels. Some earlier statements required correction or qualification; other sections needed more context to show what the available evidence supports.

Longevity figures corrected

European working-line Dobermans7.5 → approximately 8.3 years
American exhibition-bred Dobermans9.4 → approximately 10.3 years

The corrected figures are estimated medians read from the study’s survival curves.

The expanded discussion distinguishes a dog’s geographic origin from conformity to the breed standard and examines differences in breeding priorities without treating either continental label as proof of superiority. It also gives more attention to the limits of population-level findings when considering an individual dog.
