The Gambia’s 1997 Peculiar Stamp

The standing Doberman on The Gambia’s 1997 souvenir sheet is peculiar: short-looking legs and neck, a heavy body, and a small head against the larger head study surrounding it. One near-contemporary source calls the figure “the puppy,” but neither that wording nor comparison with the Boxer sheet establishes a deliberate puppy-and-adult design. This investigation tests the surviving visual and philatelic evidence, weighs the competing explanations, and identifies exactly where the record runs out.

The Doberman Archives

The Doberman Archives is a privately assembled cultural archive preserving and documenting the material history of the Doberman. Its holdings include books, photographs, postcards, periodicals, ephemera, documents, and other primary-source material, researched and digitized to place the breed’s history back into its original context.
