10 Smart Dog Travel Tips for Stupid Humans

The vacation department dictated by Fräulein1 Effie for her formidable Culture Lounge. Luggage and transcription remain human responsibilities.
Before I discuss your travel arrangements, a word about the accent you are about to hear in the audio mag version that we produce because of your TikTok-acquired attention span issues.
In our past episodes, you might have noticed my French affinity and accent. Just like Prussia’s King Friedrich der Große2, I once considered French the more beautiful language. Thus, I considered myself in excellent company and he had not been the only one with wit and style. French was fashionable at court, and the Huguenot families, who had found refuge in Berlin long before his reign, naturally spoke French as well.
And yes, before you try to display your ability to google, I know Apolda, the Doberman’s historic hometown, belonged to Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach, not Prussia. One can share a king’s taste in sense, sanity, and languages without belonging to his kingdom.
Where were we before you interrupted me with your Halbwissen3? I do not remember, but the reason I shall return to my roots on a Berliner4 detour is that I have seen enough fake Dobermans on the internet to take another look at myself. Who am I? Well, looking through my long line of documented ancestors reminded me how much German heritage is actually missing when people claim merle Dobermans are now a thing. A simple Je crois que non will not suffice. We need a clear: Ick glaube wohl nich5, du Flitzpiepe6.
The French accent has therefore been retired. You will be hearing my German character from now on.
So. Jetzt mal Klartext.7
You spend more time on your phone than working and want to go on an undeserved vacation with your Doberman. Your boss and I are delighted.
What’s that? You read that Dobermans love their people and my first couple of sentences do not seem like it?
Sehr geehrte8 Flitzpiepe6, you are mixing something up. First, YOU are not MY people. Second, my job is to protect my people with all that I’ve got. Being straight with people is a form of love to protect them. So, in the words of Will ‘Tightpants’ Ferrell, “Are you drinking my sake, Kimosabe?”
Fantastisch.9 Weiter geht’s.10
If your family is anything like mine, then your Mama11 has opened seventeen browser tabs and is mislabeling this approach as a plan, and Papa’s11 only question to make sure it is one is to immediately want to know whether parking is included.
Don’t get me wrong. The idea of a shared vacation is exciting to all of us Dobermans, but we have to put our heads into this game because neither one of our beloved flesh puppies has been researching the important matters: where shall we walk, who is bringing dinner, can the advertised garden accommodate a Doberman at anything beyond ornamental speed, and, most importantly, has Ted Bundy ever stepped foot into the establishment? We don’t want to reside at the Rest Inn Pieces, do we? Haunting.
Um es abzukürzen12: a dog vacation requires more than adding “and our Doberman” to the packing list. That’s why we need to examine your preparations before your leisure ambitions require roadside assistance, an ambulance, and venturing into valium prescriptions.
Table of contents
Plan a vacation I can actually attend
You find a beautiful property. There is a spa, a Two Buck Chuck tasting menu and an excursion to explore how inflexible you are, also known as Yoga, that together occupy most of Papa’s patience and the afternoon.
“And Mattress Springs allows dogs!”
Hurrah. How generous. We, as in your velcro Doberman, can accompany you all the way to the bedroom and then spend the vacation playing ‘find the bone’ with Ted Bundy’s ghost (let’s face it, you skipped checking out hauntedrooms.com) waiting for you to return from the things you’ll regret later and then want us to hold your hair and give you some kisses to make it better. Here’s a splendoropulous thought:
We do not need to attend every activity, but we do need an arrangement better than being repeatedly informed that you will be “back soon” while you are wearing your latest ‘don’t jump up on me’ outfit.
Choose the tenacious trip for the dog you have: her age, health, experience and ability to cope with unfamiliar places.
If the trip would make her miserable, then book something else, or admit that you don’t want to compromise, like when Starbucks is out of your oat milk, and arrange familiar, capable care at home.
There is no prize for transporting us to the armpit of dog vacations. We already have staged photographs together.
Translate “dog friendly” before paying
“Dog friendly” is one of those magnificent expressions capable of meaning nothing more than a water bowl, a substantial cleaning fee and a receptionist who once had a Labrador named ‘Buddy’.
Ask what that marketing term means for a Doberman. We don’t want to find out upon arrival that we have to pretend we are a rare smooth-haired poodle type with sock ears. We love you, but that love has limits. Okay. That’s a lie, but don’t be stupid.
Give the property our breed and weight, and, if you are, like us, a Grossfamilie13, tell them how many dogs are coming.
Confirm:
- acceptance,
- fees,
- permitted areas,
- rules about leaving dogs alone
- and where we can go out to leave our protection business card for Ted Bundy.
Ask about:
- a quieter room away from busy lifts or entrances.
Keep the agreement in writing. Wer schreibt, der bleibt.14
Check destination rules separately, including any breed controls, lead or muzzle requirements and local restrictions.
For border crossings, check the official requirements for:
- entry,
- transit
- and return,
including what food you may bring, with enough time to arrange the documents.
The train, ferry or airline has its own conditions, too.
If a muzzle will be required, introduce a properly fitted basket muzzle before traveling, with room to pant and drink. Do not unveil it at the terminal as a surprise contribution to our accessories, even if it’s Chanel. We both know that, if it is Chanel, you bought it off of Temu.
Rehearse before the luggage premiere
If the only car ride we ever take is to vet Yuckamuck's office, introduce the restraint, the parked vehicle, doors closing, engine noise and short journeys at a pace we can comfortably manage.
Build from there. Let some drives end with a pleasant walk instead of always depositing us somewhere people inspect our glorious teeth and a serving of side-eye.
We Dobermans are obviously the masters of learning, but we would highly appreciate being given something intelligible to learn from.
Also, watch when trouble begins. A Doberman comfortable in a stationary car may struggle once the wheels are turning. Drooling, restlessness or vomiting can involve travel sickness, anxiety or both; discuss persistent problems with vet Blatherskite before the long journey.
Dress for the collision, not the photographs
We get it. The harness has arrived in “woodland sage” to match nature.
“Lovely.” We have established that we complement a shade of tree bark if we go unintentionally off the road in a harness you never checked for its safety information.
For car travel, choose an appropriately fitted restraint with independent crash-test certification, checking the exact model and the size or weight range covered.
Do us a favor. Measure our deep chest and narrower waist instead of trusting the manufacturer’s weight range. Also, put on your glasses for once and read and follow the installation instructions. We’ll call you Brillenschlange15 from this moment forward.
Keep us properly restrained in the back seat.
Do not attach a car tether to our collar or add an extension or zipline so we can scream out alternating windows, “Hey, what’s your name?” at all the Tonys of the trip. Extra wandering room can undermine the protection of a tested setup.
By the way, if you use cargo-area attachment points, confirm their suitability with the vehicle manufacturer. A conveniently placed metal loop has not earned your confidence merely by resembling something useful.
Secure the luggage, too. We hate being decapitated by airborne declarations of taste. We assume you do too.
Give my dinner its own luggage allowance
Papa has packed snacks for the road. Mama has packed snacks for Papa. We have located both.
Apparently, provisions become less of a communal affair when our nose arrives.
Bring our familiar food and treats, measured portions, bowls, water and enough extra for foreseeable delays. For us raw-fed Dobermans, a freeze-dried option travels better than a cooler full of organ mash, but only if our insides are used to it. Otherwise we hope you waved your deposit goodbye upon booking the crash pad.
Also, maintain a workable meal routine; if travel sickness affects feeding, discuss the timing with the vet Snollygoster beforehand. Even though we are adventurous, an unfamiliar roadside delicacy is a poor substitute for a dinner you forgot.
If our on-the-road meals need refrigeration because you did not also keep us accustomed to freeze-dried food options, bring a properly iced cooler and a thermometer. Keep refrigerated perishables at 40°F/4°C or below, following stricter product instructions where applicable.
As for bringing all of our raw meals onto a longer trip: leave the frozen raw meals at home unless you can keep the supply frozen throughout the journey and have confirmed enough freezer space at the destination. My sixth sense tells me Ted Bundy’s hotel likely won’t have ‘use our freezer for your dog’s raw food’ accommodations. So, unless you booked an Airbnb, which would be the most sensible version of a trip with us to begin with, you are probably better off starting to introduce us to freeze-dried food right about yesterday.
But, if you still insist on bringing all the raw food on the trip, confirm there is adequate working refrigerator-freezer combination space at the accommodation if you don’t want Papa to tell us we keep wasting his money every time we want to buy some souvenirs.
And by the way, a minibar full of miniature gin and depressed chocolate may not be suitable for storing raw meat either, according to its own manufacturer.
Keep food sealed, separate from your Liverwurst16 sandwiches, and bring what you need to clean bowls and hands. If repacking a commercial product, retain a photograph of the label and lot details.
Please pack the bowl where you can reach it. I should not have to watch Papa excavate his knickers in order to serve lunch.
Stop congratulating yourselves on making good time
We have passed another pleasant-looking place with green earth fur.
Papa says we are making excellent time.
For whom? Nobody asked our bladder to participate in the route planning, and we have been watching every opportunity to spread the news of our passing through onto the ground fuzz vanish into thin air.
That’s why you need to hit the Ausfahrt17 roughly every two hours, adjusting for the individual Doberman and stopping sooner when needed. Give us Ol' Splashy, toileting, movement and a little unhurried sniffing so we can make sure Ted Bundy isn’t already on our heels. Also, because we usually have to explain everything to you, choose quieter stopping places away from traffic and Ted Bundys, and keep us leashed.
If we pause over a patch of grass, allow the investigation. You spent twelve minutes reading a gas station menu to then pick an egg salad sandwich. Does that storyline need any further explanation? Nein? Dachte ich mir.18
Check the temperature and airflow where we actually sit. Air conditioning on Papa’s face tells us surprisingly little about conditions in The Peanut Gallery. Keep vents clear and account for heat, weather and delays.
Plus, unless you own a Tesla with pet mode and more cameras than Fort Knox, do not leave us alone in your puddle jumper. Arrange your meals and toilet visits so somebody can stay with us. When two hairless apes travel, their need to visit the Golden Tower need not become a synchronized event.
Open the door with a plan
Let me give you a personal scenario. Names unchanged, inspired by true events.
The car stops. I get up. Papa gets out. Naturally, I would like to get out where Mama got out so I can take her place with Papa.
Papa, meanwhile, has opened another door and is holding three bags, one lead and a face suggesting that events have exceeded his available elbows and patience for Mama’s ‘Do you need help?’
Decide who handles the Doberman and, if applicable, the rest of the gang before unloading begins.
Keep the exit controlled, attach the walking leash and have it firmly held before releasing the car restraint. Then let us out.
With two humans, one takes the dog while the other handles luggage. With several dogs, arrange individual handovers. A motorway stop is an unsuitable venue for discovering that everybody thought somebody else had Effie, or insert your Doberman’s name.
Keep the same attention at reception, rental entrances and garden gates. Inspect a supposedly enclosed space for gaps, weak latches and escape routes before releasing us.
Ted Bundy’s favorite resting place showed a charming fence. It did not show what happens when we notice our favorite biped on the other side.
By the way, do not stage a recall demonstration beside an unfamiliar road. We are willing to admire your training achievements somewhere the audience cannot run us over.
Home, according to reception
Let me supply another visual to relate to from experience.
It was 2025. While Mama and I looked wet like the Titanic bellboys on the way down, with sixteen suitcases strapped onto fronts and backs because Papa said “only pack what YOU can carry” and Mama did not believe him, he pressed the mattress once and pronounced the room excellent.
Sounds familiar? No? Well, unlucky you for a Papa that does not follow through with his promises. That is likely also why I have to be so explicit with this list.
Wie auch immer.19 By the time Papa finished his mattress firm sales sentence, I had inspected the bathroom, made sure Ted Bundy’s ghost wasn’t hiding behind the curtains and returned to help Mama open the light luggage. Meanwhile, my Papa was prepared to supplement his mattress findings with both buttocks because he enjoys watching us deal with the consequences of our decisions.
“There,” said Mama, as she threw Papa’s spare knickers onto his head. “Home for the week.”
Papa grumbled that reception has apparently sold us instant belonging with breakfast extra.
Why am I telling you all of this? For absolutely no other reason than enjoying being unrelatable.
Anyway. Once you all are in the room, we Dobermans need a moment. There are unfamiliar smells under the door. Is it Ted Bundy after all, or did somebody else’s dog leave a rather extensive autobiography beside the wardrobe? If you are lucky, it is the latter and we will tell you which one’s which.
Then let us inspect the open bags as they require an investigation in case you have packed anything more useful than trousers, which, in our story, appeared to be a vibrating object. Unfortunately, it was not the bouncy ball; it was the tooth torture device. Don’t be surprised if we want no business with that.
If keys rattle in the corridor, we might kick Mr. Clean Mouth out of the way and go to look and sniff under the door.
When we turn around, we expect you to bring out our own bed and put it in front of yours, where we can keep you behind us and the door in view without folding a Doberman into the decorative gap between the luggage rack and what my Mama calls a downsized vacation shoe collection.
Set out our filtered water. You did bring the travel filter, right? Ted Bundy washes his feet in the pipes.
Then, actually, we are not here to waste away in Mattress Springs. Clip on our leash before opening the door. We shall take an inquisitive walk, establish where we go out and come back in, and count the doors Ted Bundy might hide behind based on the smells emerging from the overpriced boxes you call rooms.
The neighboring dogs can retain their owners’ enthusiastic friendship certificates. I certainly don’t need to meet them. I can smell the Hackenbeisser’s20 cheap attitude already.
Back upstairs, give us time with you while the room becomes familiar. Mama can unpack; Papa can perform whatever strenuous examination remains necessary beneath the duvet. Let us explore, drink and rest with our people available.
Agree when housekeeping will come. Have them visit while we are out together, or keep us securely away from the door when it opens. We might mix up the possession of fresh towels with the towels being possessed by a folded Ted Bundy. Spooky and no introduction needed either way.
And establish whether we can stay comfortably alone in the room (hint: this is not home) before disappearing to dinner. Start with a brief absence once we have settled, with a way to check how we cope. If we are distressed, arrange suitable company or change the outing. Follow the property’s rules. Bringing a baby monitor so we can show you our skill of rearranging the bed is always a good idea.
Just for those people who are slow at reading or listening: the ability to stay alone at home was developed at home. You cannot transfer it by putting our bed beneath a sign saying ‘complimentary coffee and tea’. Speaking of, put that coffee out of our reach before you need to google ‘emergency vet near me’ in a life-threatening frenzy.
By the way, if we were in Germany, we could come to dinner with you. But we are not. Shout out to my German Dobermans’ fortschrittlichem Lifestyle21.
I am not part of the visitor attractions
A stranger spots our splendoropulous appearance outside the lift.
“Oh, I love these dogs! My grandmother had one.”
He is already bending forwards, and behind him, another dog is arriving on a lead whose human appears to regard tension as a form of steering.
Let me assure you, we can wait for the next lift.
Give us space in corridors, entrances and around tables. Check before entering a confined area. Keep greetings voluntary, allow distance and prevent strangers from crowding or reaching over us.
“They’re friendly” does not settle whether we wish to meet other dogs. We have already discussed the enthusiasm certificates.
You may say, “Please give her room,” without presenting the history of the breed, apologizing for our dimensions or offering access to our face as evidence of your good manners.
Watch how we are coping. Turning away, trying to retreat, persistent pacing or difficulty settling deserves a quieter arrangement. Make room for undisturbed rest between outings. If our behavior changes suddenly or we seem unwell, seek veterinary advice. Finding a vet nearby before the trip starts is always a good idea; so is confirming their hours of operation.
Due to either your poor calendar reading abilities or the possibility that the trip could not be planned in any different way, let me also address the following: For a girl in season, plan separately: secure separation from intact males and appropriate arrangements for shared dog areas. A charming destination does not suspend reproductive proceedings.
Ultimately, boy or girl, we enjoy going out with our silly and, at times, in-need-of-assistance people. We do not owe the lobby a meet-and-greet because somebody paid for a room.
Know where help lives
Even though I have subtly supplied this point before, the TikTokers amongst us have not read every line. So let me make this more obvious.
You have saved the restaurant, the scenic route and a shop selling objects you have decided the house urgently lacks.
Do yourself and us a favor and save the veterinary help with equal devotion.
Identify a nearby practice and an emergency hospital before traveling. Confirm where to go outside normal hours, save the contact details and keep directions available offline because we cannot assist with creating cell service where there is none. Also, finding an attractive website is not the same as confirming a working service.
Carry useful health records, relevant medication names, prescribed doses and schedules, labelled medicines and enough for delays. Keep those and first-aid supplies accessible.
“She takes the little white one” is a description suitable for neither veterinary medicine nor Papa’s underwear drawer.
Check collar identification and microchip contact details. Carry a recent photograph clearly showing us in our entire Doberman glory. The portrait in which we look like the director of an exceptionally selective intelligence service may remain your wallpaper; identification would benefit from seeing our legs.
If we become separated, you will want usable information immediately. If we become ill, you will want a route to help. Neither situation needs the additional excitement of a forgotten password.
We may find your preparations excessive when they interfere with something we want to inspect. We shall nevertheless expect you to have made them.
After all, somebody must look after our humans while we are on a vacay. In our case, Papa is still investigating mattresses, and Mama has discovered that the wardrobe is too small for her modest requirements.
I shall take them for a walk.
Bis zum nächsten Mal22, Ihr Flitzpiepen6.
